Education

The advancement of talented young scientists in the Excellence Cluster is based on existing and newly-extablished educational programs and personal career development in the two universities and the partner institutions. The various offerings are available to all young scientists in the Cluster. Specific Cluster offerings round out the portfolio.

The education in the Cluster

The education in the Cluster outs a special emphasis on three aspects of the training of students, junior scientists and staff.

  • Training of practical and soft skills for an improved career development
  • Networking and internationalization as a career factor
  •  Support the independency of young scientists

Professional training at the host institutions and in the Cluster

For training purposes the Cluster mainly relies on the numerous offers available at the different locations and on the structured graduate programs initiated and organized by Cluster members. All offers of these structured programs are available to graduate students of the Cluster independent of their host institute. In addition the Cluster specifically supports if possible individual training needs.

Networking

Besides the various opportunities for further education available to the young scientists, the Cluster attaches great importance to granting young scientists the opportunity to also set up networks outside the Cluster and to give them comunication with and direct contact to internationally renowned scientists. In the course of this, the concept of the Cluster Lectures plays a particulary important role. Additionally, travel grants for attending conferences may be applied for, which are distributed preferentially to young scientists.

Support of scientific independency of young scientists

An important aim of the Cluster is to offer the opportunity to our young scientists to gain first experience as an independent scientist managing their own projects. Thus the Cluster supports different PostDocs as Young Independent Scientists (“YIS”) which receive funding covering project and personal funds for  up to five years (2,5 + 2,5 years extension). Additionally PostDocs in the Cluster have the possibility to apply with small projects for extra funding (mini proposals)
